Helping people make meaningful change

Dr Fergus Hill is a psychiatrist with a genuine commitment to helping people make meaningful change in their lives. He works with adults from all walks of life, offering careful assessment, therapy, and medication management in an integrated, human way.

He completed his medical degree in Adelaide and early training in the Northern Territory, before specialising in psychiatry with South Eastern Sydney Local Health District and JusticeHealth in New South Wales. He is completing advanced training in addictions.

Fergus has a particular interest in addictions (including behavioural addictions), mood and anxiety disorders, trauma-related conditions, and women’s mental health. His approach is holistic, trauma-informed, and collaborative—rooted in the belief that good psychiatry is built on trust, curiosity, and ongoing dialogue.

He provides evidence-based care that respects the complexity of each person’s story. Treatment plans are tailored and reviewed together, with a focus on recovery, growth, and restoring balance.

Your story, your context, and the meaning behind what you’re experiencing are taken seriously, not rushed or commoditised.

01
Genuine Care

Psychiatric care grounded in real attention, respect, and human connection.

This assessment is typically conducted over two extended sessions to allow time for careful listening, detailed history-taking, and thoughtful formulation. Where appropriate, I liaise with your GP or psychologist, organise relevant investigations, and may seek collateral information to ensure clarity and safety. The aim is not simply to provide a diagnosis, but to arrive at a clear and personalised treatment plan.

01
Integrative Psychotherapy

Psychiatric care that addresses both symptoms and the underlying psychological patterns that sustain them.

Psychotherapy may be short-term and focused, or longer-term and exploratory, depending on your needs and goals. My approach integrates psychodynamic understanding, trauma-informed principles, and evidence-based techniques such as cognitive behavioural therapy(CBT) and motivational enhancement therapy (MET). The work is collaborative and reflective, aimed at deepening insight, strengthening emotional regulation, and fostering lasting change.

Inpatient Psychiatric Treatment

Structured inpatient care when additional support and monitoring are required.

During periods of significant distress, risk, or functional decline, private hospital admission may be recommended. I am able to provide active management throughout admission, with a focus on stabilisation, safety, and restoration of function. I see patients 2-3 times per week and work closely with our inpatient nursing and psychology team. Discharge planning and follow-up are carefully coordinated to ensure continuity and support beyond the hospital setting.

Careful, evidence-based prescribing delivered collaboratively and with close follow-up.

Medication is considered thoughtfully, with attention to benefits, potential side effects, physical health factors, and your long-term goals. Decisions are made together, not imposed. Where appropriate, medication is integrated alongside psychotherapy and lifestyle strategies to support sustained and meaningful improvement.

GP Liaison and Coordinated Care

Clear communication and coordinated care with your treating team.

I prioritise timely correspondence and, where appropriate, direct contact with your GP and other providers involved in your care. Effective treatment depends on collaboration, and I value the depth of knowledge that GPs have about their patients. This coordinated approach helps ensure your care is consistent, safe, and aligned across settings.

How I work

Every person deserves a thoughtful plan—one that makes sense for their life.Together, we define clear goals and build a treatment path that is:

Personalised

A healing relationship built on trust, curiosity, ongoing dialogue, and a willingness to go into depth when that’s what creates change.

Evidence-based

From mood, anxiety and trauma to lifestyle, family, medical, cultural and spiritual factors, everything that shapes your well-being is considered.

Strength-focused

One clinician who can see your whole journey, offering psychotherapy and medical care in one integrated approach.

Collaborative

A calming space designed to help you feel held, not judged, so you can take the next steps with confidence.

I use both psychiatric medications and psychotherapy, drawing from motivational enhancement, cognitive behavioural therapy, and longer-term psychodynamic therapy and schema therapy approaches.

Above all, I aim to build a genuine therapeutic connection, one that helps people feel understood, supported, and ready to move forward. I am comfortable working on deeper, long-term issues that will have a lasting beneficial impact on patient wellbeing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Your story, your context, and the meaning behind what you’re experiencing are taken seriously, not rushed or commoditised.

Do I need a referral?
Yes, a valid GP referral is required to access Medicare rebates. If you’re unsure, you’re welcome to reach out and clarify before booking.
What types of difficulties do you work with?
A broad range, including mood disorders, anxiety, trauma-related difficulties, addiction, and complex presentations where multiple factors are involved. The focus is on depth and clarity rather than quick labels.
Who Do I work with?
Adults from age of 18 to 65.
How long are appointments?
Appointments are typically 50–60 minutes for therapy and 25–30 minutes for standard reviews. Initial assessments may be longer or split across sessions to ensure quality.
What are your fees?
Fees reflect the time, care, and depth of assessment provided. Medicare rebates are available with a valid referral, and the out-of-pocket cost may reduce once the Medicare Safety Net is reached. Please see fee’s page.
Will you communicate with my GP?
Yes. With your consent, your GP will receive clear and timely updates so your care remains coordinated and supported.
How soon can I get an appointment?
Availability varies. Efforts are made to offer timely appointments, particularly where there is clinical need.
Is this the right service for urgent or crisis care?
No. This is a private outpatient service and not designed for emergency or crisis management. If you need immediate support, please contact your GP, local emergency department, or crisis services. However, a small amount of time each week is intentionally reserved for more time-sensitive concerns. This allows emerging issues to be addressed early, before they become crises.
How are initial assessments conducted?
Initial assessments are usually conducted over two sessions. The first is a 60-minute interview focused on understanding your history, current difficulties, and context. This is followed by a 30-minute review approximately one week later. Between sessions, I may gather collateral information (with your consent), review any relevant results, use standardised assessment tools where appropriate, and carefully reflect on your presentation. In the follow-up session, you will be provided with a clear formulation and a tailored treatment plan. If medication or other interventions are indicated earlier, these can be initiated after the first session where appropriate.
