Genuine Care

Psychiatric care grounded in real attention, respect, and human connection.

Helping people make meaningful change

Dr Fergus Hill is a psychiatrist committed to thoughtful, compassionate care that helps people move from distress toward greater stability, clarity, and renewed direction in their lives.

He works in a deliberate and unhurried way, allowing time to understand not only symptoms, but the wider context in which they have developed — relationships, stressors, temperament, physical health, and life history. Assessment is not reduced to a checklist or a quick label. It is a careful process of developing a shared understanding of what is happening and why.

Fergus holds a grounded belief that lasting change is possible. His approach combines steady optimism with careful reasoning and high clinical standards. Treatment plans are shaped collaboratively and reviewed over time, whether they involve psychotherapy, medication, or broader adjustments that support recovery.

Trust, curiosity, and consistency sit at the centre of his work. Over time, treatment often evolves beyond symptom relief toward deeper self-understanding, strengthened resilience, and a more stable sense of balance.

Care that actually connects

A healing relationship built on trust, curiosity, ongoing dialogue, and a willingness to go into depth when that’s what creates change.

A full picture of your mental health

From mood, anxiety and trauma to lifestyle, family, medical, cultural and spiritual factors, everything that shapes your well-being is considered.

Therapy and medication held together

One clinician who can see your whole journey, offering psychotherapy and medical care in one integrated approach.

A safe, regulated environment

A calming space designed to help you feel held, not judged, so you can take the next steps with confidence.

I use both psychiatric medications and psychotherapy, drawing from motivational enhancement, cognitive behavioural therapy, and longer-term psychodynamic therapy and schema therapy approaches.

Above all, I aim to build a genuine therapeutic connection, one that helps people feel understood, supported, and ready to move forward. I am comfortable working on deeper, long-term issues that will have a lasting beneficial impact on patient wellbeing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Your story, your context, and the meaning behind what you’re experiencing are taken seriously, not rushed or commoditised.

Do I need a referral?

Yes, a valid GP referral is required to access Medicare rebates. If you’re unsure, you’re welcome to reach out and clarify before booking.

What types of difficulties do you work with?

A broad range, including mood disorders, anxiety, trauma-related difficulties, addiction, and complex presentations where multiple factors are involved. The focus is on depth and clarity rather than quick labels.

Who Do I work with?

Adults from age of 18 to 65.

How long are appointments?

Appointments are typically 50–60 minutes for therapy and 25–30 minutes for standard reviews. Initial assessments may be longer or split across sessions to ensure quality.

What are your fees?

Fees reflect the time, care, and depth of assessment provided. Medicare rebates are available with a valid referral, and the out-of-pocket cost may reduce once the Medicare Safety Net is reached. Please see fee’s page.

Will you communicate with my GP?

Yes. With your consent, your GP will receive clear and timely updates so your care remains coordinated and supported.

How soon can I get an appointment?

Availability varies. Efforts are made to offer timely appointments, particularly where there is clinical need.

Is this the right service for urgent or crisis care?

No. This is a private outpatient service and not designed for emergency or crisis management. If you need immediate support, please contact your GP, local emergency department, or crisis services.
However, a small amount of time each week is intentionally reserved for more time-sensitive concerns. This allows emerging issues to be addressed early, before they become crises.

How are initial assessments conducted?

Initial assessments are usually conducted over two sessions. The first is a 60-minute interview focused on understanding your history, current difficulties, and context. This is followed by a 30-minute review approximately one week later.
Between sessions, I may gather collateral information (with your consent), review any relevant results, use standardised assessment tools where appropriate, and carefully reflect on your presentation. In the follow-up session, you will be provided with a clear formulation and a tailored treatment plan.
If medication or other interventions are indicated earlier, these can be initiated after the first session where appropriate.
